Are you searching for ways to improve your resumé? You are in the right place! On Sunday, January 26th, 2020, The Joy of Learning met for "Complimentary Coffee" at Spangdahlem Starbucks to review resumés, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles. During this time, we were joined by Brittanye Sago, MBA who as a professional resumé writer shared her top 4 tips for enhancing and optimizing your resumé. These tips are designed for jobs seekers who desire to increase their chances of progressing through the application cycle.
1. Tailor your Resumé
Always read the job description that you are applying for and use applicable keywords from the description in your resume.
2. Objectives are Obsolete
Objectives are a thing of the past. Use a skill summary that references your job history, current goals, and relevant hard and soft skills.
3. Use Strong Action Verbs
Employers are looking for strong action verbs in your resumé. Words like work, function, handle, participate are all considered weak action verbs. Utilize words like administer, advise, brainstorm, and collaborate to show what you have accomplished.
4. Craft a Cover Letter
Cover letters are imperative. They give a clear, condensed picture of your accomplishments. They can also explain any employment gaps in your work history.
Bonus Tip: Remember to proofread your resumé and use an appropriate email address.
These tips are not exhaustive but are a great start in beginning the process of seeking employment or promotion to a new position. Do you desire to progress on your professional journey? "The reason why rivers and seas receive the homage of a hundred mountain streams is that they keep below them. Thus they are able to reign over all the mountain streams. So the sage, wishing to be above men, putteth himself below them; wishing to be before them, he putteth himself behind them. Thus, though his place be above men, they do not feel his weight; though his place be before them, they do not count it an injury.” -Lao Tzu
