It is always about connection! Wherever I am I desire to hear the stories of people. My visit to Monterosso al Mare is no different! Meet Mattia Fante, a gentle spirit welcoming guests to the beautiful hills of Cinque Terre. During our time together, he professed his love for the Blues and shares how his friend purchased an iconic Blues collection a few years ago.
Mattia has lived in several locations over the last 10 years. These locations include Spain, Brazil, and Australia. His adventures were extraordinary however he desires to settle down and calls Monterosso al Mare home. Interestingly, he shares how his home in an area outside of Monterosso al Mare lacks internet access. He takes pride in this and is happy to disconnect from social media which he referred to as addictive in nature. However, his love for reading has abounded and he feels connected to his community.
You can find Mattia Fante at a splendid food truck outside Agriturismo Missanega. The food truck is arrayed with homemade lemon jams, olive oils, and wine. There is also an autographed guitar next to a table. After serving us a fresh sandwich with sweet tomatoes, mozzarella, and prosciutto and a crisp salad, he serenaded us with ”Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out.” It was a welcomed gesture and such a complement to our time in Monterosso al Mare.
The song resonated especially when considering some of the most difficult times in our lives are the loneliest. As my family and I are entrenched in a season of change, our time in Monterosso was a pleasant reminder these are moments of comfort on a journey.

"The reason why rivers and seas receive the homage of a hundred mountain streams is that they keep below them. Thus they are able to reign over all the mountain streams. So the sage, wishing to be above men, putteth himself below them; wishing to be before them, he putteth himself behind them. Thus, though his place be above men, they do not feel his weight; though his place be before them, they do not count it an injury.” -Lao Tzu
